Having Nothing Could Mean Something
Three men, Paul, Sam and Ted stayed in a small hotel. They all follow a
habit each time they go out – Paul always carries an umbrella with him,
Sam always carries a walking stick with him whereas Ted always carries
nothing along.
One morning, the sky became overcast signifying a storm ahead. However,
they still went out, following their usual habit. Indeed, it started
raining soon after. As before, they returned to the hotel at around the
same time, around 10 p.m. at night.
The hotel owner noticed something and could not help but asked, ‘Pardon
me but I’m really puzzled. Why is Mr. Paul who has an umbrella with him
all drenched? Why did Mr. Sam who has a walking stick with him fall in
the mud (he saw mud all over him)? And why is Mr. Ted who carries
nothing with him totally dry and safe? Could someone explain please?
Paul said, ‘Having an umbrella with me drove me on my journey even
though it was raining. But the rain got really heavy with very strong
wind blowing. My umbrella was not that big, you see. That was how I got
wet!’ Sam said, ‘I had no umbrella with me so I stopped to take shelter
when it started raining. When the rain finally stopped, I carried on
with my journey. That’s why I’m dry. I have a walking stick with me.
Thinking that it should prevent me from falling down, I took a shorter
path back over the hill. Unfortunately, the wet pathway still caused me
to fall a few times.’ Ted said, smiling, ‘I did not have a walking stick
so I could only walk along the big roads and I walked really carefully.
No falling down for sure! I had no umbrella so I could only take shelter
somewhere when it rained. Not wet at all for sure! Nothing is special
actually.’
The hotel owner thought for a long while and finally said, ‘Looks like
the one who has no advantage turned out to have the most advantage!’ The
three men looked at one another and laughed.
We constantly remind ourselves of our weaknesses whereas we are usually
not so careful about our strength. An advantage that attracts envy eyes
may lead to a disadvantage if it is not fully or carefully made used of,
leading even to failure. We may have some shortcoming or disadvantage.
But making good use of it can turn it into your strength and advantage.
